The future vision of the Queensland Government for the region from Townsville to Bowen, is for it to become a centre for Heavy and Toxic Industries. NQCC is opposed to the development of these areas in close proximity to residential areas, wetlands and marine areas.
Rocky Springs Residential Development
Approval is being sought to create a massive residential development with a projected population of 55000 people on a 1,594 hectares site to the south of Townsville.
Much of the habitat of this site is known to be important to the endangered Black Throated Finch. This style of satellite city development goes against everything we have learned regarding sustainable town planning.
Townsville Ocean Terminal and Canal Estate
The proposal to build a canal estate at the mouth of the Ross Creek in Townsville is a prime example of poor planning and government irresponsibility.
This development would permanently remove a large area of habitat critical to the rare Snubfin dolphin, the only Dolphin found only in Australia. It will also place residential homes directly adjacent and down wind of an industrial site.
Coral Sea
In 2001 NQCC led the campaign against the application to explore for oil in the Coral Sea just outside the boundary of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Since then we have been actively campaigning to have the Marine Park boundary extended to include the unique and magnificent reefs, islands and atolls of the Coral Sea. This would ensure that both the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef are never threatened by the damage that can be caused by this industry.
