About the Project
The Story Circles Project invites local community members to share their stories and experiences of North Queensland's weather extremes - from flooding to heatwaves, and the ways our lives are impacted by these events. Sharing, validating, and understanding the realities of extreme weather in our regional area is necessary for solving the complex issues that our communities face. These stories will help us to advocate for solutions that will ultimately build community resilience in the face of climate change. More immediately, we aim to foster and strengthen supportive networks within the community by bringing together individuals with similar experiences.
What are Story Circles?
We are facilitating group conversations with community members who
- have been recently affected by heatwaves, floods, cyclones, or other extreme weather.
- are particularly susceptible to heat and hazards due to factors like age, health, housing circumstance, occupation.
- work or volunteer in disaster response and recovery efforts; or in community support services (e.g. healthcare, social services).
Each Story Circle includes 4-6 participants that will share stories over tea, coffee, and snacks for a duration of 2 hours. We are hosting various Story Circles in June and July 2024.
What happens with my story?
We will compile all stories from the Story Circles into a community report that tells the story of climate change in North Queensland, and what solutions are needed to mitigate these impacts.
