Paperbark July 2021

Paperbark header

We hope you are keeping well. We have been kept busy throughout July with our submission on the Museum of Underwater Art, giving away Climate Action Now! signs at various markets and promoting our Postcard Art Exhibition far and wide!

We'd love to thank all of our members who have recently renewed and extend a warm welcome to everyone who has recently joined our membership! Your support makes us stronger.

We also appreciate all those who made a thoughtful donation at the end of the last financial year. Our one-off or monthly donations are fully tax-deductible and every contribution counts!

In this edition of Paperbark, you will find numerous ways to get actively involved with us or support our work. We hope you enjoy the (slightly shorter than usual*) read!

In this edition:

  • NQCC Updates:
    • Tom O'Grady joins our committee
    • JCU Market Day
  • Actions & Activities for You:

NQCC UPDATES

Welcome Tom!

Tom O'Grady

We are very pleased to welcome Tom O'Grady to our Management Committee!

Tom grew up in Townsville and from an early age has been passionate about protecting our natural environment. He holds a Bachelor of Business in Economics from James Cook University and is particularly interested in natural resource management and urban sustainability. Tom believes that major societal changes have to happen if we are to avert the worst effects of the climate crisis.

In his downtime, Tom likes to go bushwalking, tend to his garden and is always up for a bit of karaoke.

If you haven't bumped into Tom already at JCU or around Townsville, hopefully you'll get a chance to meet him (and the rest of our committee) at one of our upcoming events!

JCU Market Day

Staff member Tiff and management committee member Matt had a great time at the JCU Market Day meeting some amazing people! They made important connections with various groups and individuals and welcomed many new supporters who signed up on the day. A special shout out to those who volunteered to pose for a Climate Action Now snap shot!

Tiff at Cotters with a climate action sign

We want CLIMATE ACTION NOW! Help us spread the word around North Queensland with these bright, eye-catching signs and stickers!

Displaying a sign or a sticker on your fence or letterbox, in a window or at your workplace sends a clear message to leaders in politics, business and community that we want climate action now!

Help us spread the message by sharing a photo of your new sticker or sign on social media and tagging us, or emailing your photo to [email protected]

Reply to this email to arrange pick-up from our office at 114 Boundary St, Railway Estate. Delivery may also be arranged, depending on your location.

Artworks Wanted!

What is our Postcard Art Fundraiser?

Every two years, we call on artists from near and far to donate small artworks that fit into our chosen theme. These artworks are displayed in an exhibition at the well-loved Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts here in Townsville. After people have had a chance to look at the artworks at the exhibition (or on our website), we hold a fundraising auction!

How can you help?

You can support his event in three ways:

  • Donate a small (roughly postcard-sized) artwork (see how here).
  • Sign up to volunteer with us at our installation or auction here.
  • Help us spread the word by sharing this digital flyer with your friends!

We already have some beautiful pieces and we can't wait to see your creations! This year's theme is "Nature: The wonder and the tragedy".

Looking for some creative inspiration? Check out the Hive Alive 2021 workshops available this week!

Green Drinks

Green Drinks banner

Green Drinks is an informal and friendly networking event for people who care for the environment. We always have laughs, stories and information to share with each other!

Last Green Drinks, Diana told us all about Plastic Free Townsville, the new bans on single-use plastic and some useful tips to help reduce waste. Let's take a bit of Plastic Free July into every month!

The next Green Drinks will be held from 6pm on 13th August at the Commonwealth Hotel, South Townsville. We hope you can join us!

Thank you for being involved with us, whatever that looks like!

Yours naturally,

Crystal and Tiff
North Queensland Conservation Council

*Why such a succinct edition of Paperbark? Crystal took some time off this month to go camping and exploring, so hasn't contributed as much as usual. The next edition will likely be chockers.
