This Clean Up Australia Day, the North Queensland Conservation Council was proud to be part of two incredible clean-up efforts that brought together community members of all ages to tackle waste pollution in our local environment. Special thanks to Linda, Bernadette, Felicity, Chris, Adam, Luke, Jenny, Mike, Naomi (and kids Ellie and August), Andy, and Luna for representing NQCC!
Saturday, March 2 – Mundy Creek
The first clean-up, led by Dry Tropics Landcare, saw a dedicated group of volunteers - including long-time Landcarers, regulars, and a fantastic team of Roving Scouts—roll up their sleeves to remove rubbish and flood debris. We collected:
- 5 bags of trash
- 1 bag of recyclables
- 7 syringes
- A set of wooden louvres
- Two motorbike helmets
- And tackled some much-needed priority weeding!
It was heartening to see the space looking better after recent setbacks, and we’re grateful for everyone’s hard work in restoring this important site. Crystal, NQCC’s coordinator, joined the effort, supporting the team in making a real impact.
Sunday, March 3 – Bohle River Boat Ramp
Our second clean-up, organized by OzFish, was just as impactful, with nearly 50 volunteers - including families, Roving Scouts, and representatives from Restorative Justice Townsville and the Islamic Society—joining forces for three hours of action. Together, we removed:
- Almost 2 tonnes of waste including
- 19 dumped tyres
- a whole lot of thongs
- a washing machine
- a bed frame
- and a trailer
Waste dumping in this area is shocking, but the teamwork and enthusiasm of our volunteers made the day a success. It was also a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded community members. Luna, NQCC’s Community Campaigner, joined the clean-up, helping make a difference on the ground.
This event was held in partnership with OzFish, TIDY Townsville, Dry Tropics Healthy Waters, Townsville City Council, EcoMarines, and BCF (Boating, Camping, Fishing).
A huge thank you to everyone who took part - your efforts are making a real difference! Let’s keep the momentum going for a cleaner, greener North Queensland.
