Here are four more stories from the NQCC 50 anniversary Project from Jim Tait, Lyn Wallace and Alan Webb. 

Jim Tait followed Peter McAdam as NQCC Coordinator and took over the role in 1989 when the election of the Goss Government brought the Bjelke-Petersen era to a final close. In his first story Jim tells us how he became NQCC Coordinator and describes the change in the Environment scene in Queensland with the new government.

Hinchinbrook Campaign

This October marked the 30 year anniversary of protecting the Hinchinbrook Channel. Many regional conservation councils like NQCC as well as national groups will remember this campaign well. Dredging of the Port Hinchinbrook Channel continues to this day, threatening the habitat of Dugongs and other precious wildlife.

Therefore, the next three stories from our NQCC 50 anniversary project focus on the campaign against Keith Williams' efforts to build a resort at Port Hinchinbrook.

Stories of the Wild North: 50 years of NQCC

What do Michelle Dyer (social scientist and stand-up comedian), Liz Downes (2020 Queensland Volunteer of the Year), Les Bandt (the man who invented the ute in 1933), and the Aquapella world music choir all have in common? 

Answer: they were all part of NQCC’s 50th anniversary celebration “Stories of the Wild North” held at the Drill Hall Studio on Friday the 23rd of August.
