NQCC is pleased to welcome the Magnetic Island Nature Care Association (MINCA) to share their insights into an issue that matters deeply to all of us who love Yunbenun/Magnetic Island and its fringing reefs.
MINCA recently hosted well-attended information sessions on the island about dredging and sea dumping in Cleveland Bay. Now, they are bringing this important conversation to the mainland for those who could not attend and for everyone who wants to better understand whatβs happening just offshore.
The photo above shows a plume of dredge spoil drifting toward Maggie earlier this year.
Many community members have raised concerns and suggested moving the dredge dump site to deeper water. These sessions will help us discuss what that could mean, hear the latest updates, and consider what actions might encourage the Port and the Federal Government to take this issue seriously.
With coral spawning underway and our waters alive with new life, itβs a meaningful time to reflect on water clarity and the health of the reefs that make this place so special.
We invite you to join us to listen, learn, and be part of a constructive community conversation about dredging and dumping.
