Full of Energy at the Strand Night Markets

What a fantastic night at the Strand Night Markets last Friday! The crowds were out in full force, and after the recent rain, people were keen to get outside and enjoy the evening.

Our energy voting board was a real head-turner, drawing in plenty of curious passersby. We had great conversations with over 40 community members, diving into the complexities of the energy transition. Renewables took the win again, but there was certainly interest in nuclear technology.

People appreciated the open and honest discussions, and while we welcome all viewpoints, we’re upfront about our stance: nuclear isn’t the right fit for North Queensland or Australia. We need fast, affordable, and sustainable solutions to cut emissions, ease cost-of-living pressures, and avoid major environmental risks like nuclear waste management, excessive water use, and mining site contamination - challenges that still haven't been adequately addressed.

When it comes to renewables, recycling is a hot topic, and we often get questions about how much can actually be reused. Many people were relieved to hear that wind turbines are 85-94% recyclable and solar panels up to 95%! It’s great to see growing awareness of the full life cycle of these technologies.

Lastly, a huge thank you to our amazing volunteers, Ben and Adam, for their enthusiasm and support on the night!

These conversations are crucial, and we love hearing what the community thinks! Where do you stand on the future of energy? Let’s keep the discussion going.

See you at the next market!
