We were thrilled to gather once again at Grill’d for our latest Green Drinks, this time featuring an inspiring talk by Jason Lange, co-founder of Atlas Soils. With 25 attendees, the evening was filled with great conversations, new connections, and a deeper dive into the power of regenerative soil practices. Plus, we welcomed six new sign-ups to our NQCC newsletter.
Jason, who describes himself first and foremost as a husband, dad, and caring community member, shared the journey of Atlas Soils, a venture started by three dads committed to making a difference. By focusing on reducing waste, improving ecosystem health, and saving energy, Atlas Soils demonstrates how businesses can create real impact. Jason prefers the term resources over waste, emphasizing that nature follows a circular system where everything is interconnected.
One of the key initiatives he highlighted was the Grounds to Ground program, which collects used coffee grounds and transforms them into fertilizer. He stressed that Atlas Soils is uplifting existing community efforts, bringing together local businesses and individuals to make the circular economy work in practice.
Jason’s big vision for Townsville? “Take the biggest small step you can.” Solutions don’t come from government alone - real change happens on the ground, through trial and error, and by taking responsibility for our environment. He also emphasized the importance of working with First Nations people and recognizing their deep knowledge of land stewardship. Ultimately, healing the soil means healing our connection to nature and our own wellbeing.
Jason also introduced an upcoming Urban Food Calendar for Townsville, which will provide practical tips to inspire more people to get their hands dirty—not for a perfect garden, but to reconnect with the land as individuals, families, and a community.
To wrap up the night, NQCC Community Campaigner Luna led a fun Soil Myth Quiz, where everyone helped debunk common misconceptions. Some myths discussed included:
- Does adding sand to clay soil improve drainage?
- Are banana peels really great for fertilizing plants?
A huge thank you to Jason and everyone who joined us! Stay tuned for our next Green Drinks!
