Living with Climate Change in North Queensland

Story Circle Report Banner

Over the past four months, NQCC sat with members of the community to talk about personal experiences with weather extremes in North Queensland. We learned a lot about the diversity of impacts, people's future worries, but also about our great potential to increase local resilience.

After hearing these stories, we can say that North Queenslanders have started to notice the effects of local climate change in their everyday lives. Many have also started to take action, such as raising their houses to protect against flooding, escaping over those hot summer months, or investing in solar and batteries to become more self-reliant. Many also struggle to take action due to vulnerabilities or inequalities in our community. The stories from the story circle project are now ready for you to view. We have created an interactive report that highlights examples of what living with climate change in North Queensland looks like. These stories are sometimes traumatic, sometimes hopeful, but always very personal. We therefore ask you to treat them with respect.

What can YOU do to support climate resilience in our community?

  • Share this report with your family, friends, or colleges. Let's keep the conversations about climate change in our community going. There are more stories and more ideas that will increase our individual and collective resilience.
  • Support the Heat and Hazards Campaign. We are advocating for adaptation strategies that will equip our local governments with more resources to take proactive measures. Sign this letter going out to our new political leaders.
  • Join us in thanking all the storytellers and the NQCC Climate Action Group for their valuable activism.
