Paperbark September 2024

September is always an exciting time of year, because it means we get to come together with members and celebrate the achievements of the year at our Annual General Meeting. This September is also the start of the countdown to Queensland's State Election, with high stakes for climate action and nature protection.

I hope that you will stand with us at the Townsville Community Alliance's upcoming Election Assembly on Thursday 10 October, and that you enjoy our exciting 2023/24 Annual Report!

NQCC UPDATES

2024 AGM

2024 AGM

Last week we met with members for our backyard AGM. We gratefully acknowledge the contributions of Chris Pam in her role as President, Madde Price in her role as Treasurer and Angela Egan in her time on our Committee, and welcome our incoming Management Committee. We also welcome John Connell and David Cassells as new Honorary Life Members! Read all about our AGM here...

Maroonprint Assembly Kirwan

Maroonprint Election Assembly

On September 3rd, the Townsville Community Alliance was part the Queensland Community Alliance's Maroonprint Assembly, where negotiations were held with the Queensland Premier and Opposition Leader about Queensland's future. Some great commitments from the party leaders have already come out of this extraordinary demonstration of people power.

Threatened Species Day Group

Threatened Species Day

With the help of our fantastic volunteers, we collected 115 signatures on our beautiful Stand Up for Nature banner, demanding more protected areas and stronger nature laws for our threatened species! There are clearly a lot of Queenslanders who care deeply about nature and would like to see this addressed in the upcoming election.

If you would like to support this campaign, get your own Stand Up for Nature Sign from NQCC!

Green Drinks Sept

Green Drinks Recap

September Green Drinks was all about our waterways because we were joined by Healthy Waters Partnership for the Dry Tropics. Did you know that both the Ross and Bohle Basin are under pressure due to nutrient pollution? As a consequence residents are encouraged to 'Back the Bohle'. If you would like to learn more, we have a Water Report Card at our office for you!

Uranium Mining Map

Uranium Mining a Recipe for Disaster

50km west of the Townsville CBD lies a sleeping beast that, if awoken, could spell disaster for Townsville locals, our environment and our water supply. The Ben Lomond Uranium mine has been closed since 1981, following a serious radioactive spill caused by the ore stockpile wall being breached during torrential tropical rainfall. Read our media release and local coverage here.

Recycle Renewables?

Recycle Renewables?

Decarbonising our energy industry is one of the most effective levers we have here in Australia to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and the faster we do this, the better. This means we need a rapid rollout of renewable energy, and THIS means the construction and installation of a lot of energy infrastructure. So where will all of these materials ultimately end up? Read more...
