North Queensland Conservation Council has joined Move Beyond Coal in nationwide 12 Days of Action to say NO to more coal and gas projects and to ask for a necessary reform of our environmental laws.
This year the Labor Government will decide whether to open the flood gates to 116 more coal and gas projects that will lock in decades more climate emergencies for our communities. Furthermore, our environmental laws (EPBC Act) desperately need a reform. In their current form they are ineffective in terms of future environmental changes, including climate change.
That's why, from April 29 – May 10, NQCC facilitated three different climate actions to demonstrate the urgency.
For our first action, we organised a 'Roadside Party' in front of MP Phillip Thompson’s office. We demonstrated to him that Townsville wants both Labor and the Coalition to stop gambling with our future.
For our second action at the Strand Night Markets, we asked the community to put their hand up for climate action by signing our canvases with a hand print. This was a family-friendly action that attracted many young members in our community.
Our final action took place at the strand where we presented our climate action art and sent out a clear message for a direction change.
Our Community Campaigner Luna Prince says: "We need more visible climate actions in the community and should not underestimate their impact, no matter how small the number of participants are. In the global movement for climate actions, sometimes one person can make the difference. For Australia it is important that Townsville takes a stand and joins a nationwide effort to create a better future."
