The 70s and 80s

Travel back to the 70s and 80s with us!
In the first story Alastair Birtles describes the experience of NQCC activists in the 70s in making sure that the newly developed Yabulu nickel refinery followed proper procedures in disposing of toxic waste.
In the next story Adrian Jeffreys tells the story of the successful campaign to prevent the construction of a coal loading facility in South Townsville in the early 1980s.
From 1980 until 1984 NQCC shared a shopfront at 819 Flinders Street with Action for World Development (AWD). In the last story Peter Hanley, who at that time worked for AWD, shares some memories from that period.
Thank you to all the storytellers!
This project is supported by Townsville City Council.
