Margaret Moorhouse

Today we learned of the passing of a beloved friend and legendary environmental activist Margaret Moorhouse (aka Peggy Hyde). Our thoughts are with her family and all who knew her well.

Margaret's contributions to North Queensland's environmental protection spanned many decades, and even through long battles with illness and injury, her sharpness and dedication to the cause never waned.

From non-violent direct action to intense interactions with developers and politicians, Margaret refused to take environmental destruction sitting down. Her dedication to the protection of Hinchinbrook Island is a particular source of inspiration to us.

A staunch and courageous advocate, Margaret was known for her boldness and intelligence, alongside her ability to tell a great story and inspire activists who followed in her footsteps. She was a trailblazer in so many facets of life, and showed everyone around her that anything is possible.

NQCC has gained so much from Margaret's contributions - she even gave our newsletter Paperbark its name! (Read more about that here.)

We'll miss your stories and your laugh, Margaret, but your legacy lives on. Thank you for all you've sacrificed over the years. May you rest peacefully. 🌿

North Queensland-based friends of Margaret's gather at NQCC to remember her.
