Paperbark August 2024

Paperbark banner

Last month NQCC celebrated a historic milestone. We looked back at 50 years of environmental advocacy in North Queensland and honoured our past with stories, poetry and songs from across the decades. While our environment has always faced challenges, each generation has responded with courage, compassion and fierce determination. It's a privilege to carry on the fight!

Thank you for being with us in our 50th year - whether this is your 50th year as a supporter or your first. Looking forward, you'll find so many opportunities to step up and take action this month.

Please enjoy this edition of Paperbark!

NQCC UPDATES

MERT

Ministerial Roundtable

Crystal recently represented NQCC at the second Ministerial Environment Roundtable (MERT) of the year. We joined conservation councils from throughout Queensland in our calls for stronger action on climate change and improvements to our much-needed renewable energy transition. Read more on our blog...

Anniversary

50 Years of NQCC!

Thank you to everyone who helped bring our 50th Anniversary to life! We loved the stories, poetry and music, and most importantly the chance to reconnect with all of you. Read all about the event here...

Our event and storytelling project have received support from Townsville City Council and we'd like to demonstrate the impact that the event had on those who attended. Could you take two minutes to complete our feedback survey?

Story Circle pic

Story Circles

Thank you for sharing your stories of weather extremes in North Queensland with us! These stories are invaluable to our campaign addressing the progressing impacts of climate change. We appreciate your time and trust!

We are now working on the report that will illustrate the lived reality of climate change in our region. We would like to organise a launch that honours these stories and propels us forward in local climate action.

Green Drinks Recap

What a great time we had at Green Drinks last Thursday, where we heard from Dominique from NQ Wildlife Care. We learned that they receive 50-100 rescue calls per day and there are no wildlife vets in our region to support them. If you think wildlife caring is for you, contact them to see how you can get involved. They do such an important and rewarding job! Thank you to everyone who attended and pitched in with the clean up.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

Wetlands and Agriculture

Biodiversity strategy consultation

The Queensland Government wants to know what you think about the proposed Performance Framework for Queensland’s Biodiversity Strategy. The Framework will set targets, supported by actions, to drive performance for biodiversity by 2030, and indicators to monitor our progress over time. Have your say!

Koala

Stand Up For Koalas

A new report has found there are at least 26 proposed new coal mines that will clear important koala habitat across Queensland and NSW. These coal mines across Australia would also pump out billions of tonnes of carbon pollution.

To stop this, the Queensland Conservation Council is writing a letter to Minister Tanya Plibersek. If you would like to support this petition, sign up here.
