Green Drinks with Reef Ecologic and MOUA

Green Drinks May 2025 Group

Despite a rainy day, the skies cleared just in time for a very special edition of Green Drinks by the Sea - and something was truly in the air. We were thrilled to welcome many new faces, alongside familiar friends we hadn’t seen for a while. It’s clear: our movement is growing.

This month, we were joined by two outstanding local champions for the ocean: Dr. Adam Smith and Jacinta Jefferies, representing both Reef Ecologic and the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA). From marine science to underwater sculptures, their work beautifully connects community, creativity, and conservation.

Jacinta reminded us of the Ocean Siren - visible from where we were seated on the Strand. This stunning sculpture isn’t just beautiful, it’s a real-time temperature gauge for ocean waters and a storyteller, illuminating the health of our marine environment.

She explained how the Museum of Underwater Art uses art to spark curiosity and engagement with the reef. One of its features, the 8 Sentinels, honors marine scientists and conservationists whose legacy inspires us to protect these ecosystems. Jacinta emphasised how personal experience and direct contact with the reef can powerfully motivate action - when people experience it, they care.

Adam shared his journey founding Reef Ecologic in 1991, describing the organisation as focused not only on the environment but also on the wellbeing of the community. What could be called marine social work, involves not only working large commercial research projects but also community outreach, and citizen science.

He spoke passionately about the app iNaturalist, which allows everyday citizens to log their nature sightings - helping scientists gather crucial biodiversity data while encouraging people to connect more deeply with nature.

Reflecting on Townsville’s past reputation, Adam recalled when people called it "Brownsville," but said he’s always seen the potential in this vibrant, diverse, and science-rich community. While acknowledging that progress on climate and environmental action may feel stalled, especially in the face of political resistance, he remains hopeful. He believes in the power of collaboration to make transformational change.

That’s why Reef Ecologic is investing in local voices and sponsoring organisations like NQCC to contribute to broader discussions - such as a soon to be published article in a special edition of the Sustainability Journal.

As we move toward World Ocean Day, both Adam and Jacinta have a full lineup of activities planned. You can explore and join in via this link.

Adam left us with a simple yet powerful suggestion: "At the very least, go down to the ocean on World Ocean Day. Put your hand in the water. Feel it. Rub it on your arms like some First Nations people do. Notice the wildlife. Reconnect."
