Sunday's Climate & Energy Rally was a simple yet powerful demonstration of the wisdom, compassion and strength of this community.
It was a great reminder that, no matter where the chips fall this weekend, there will always be people ready to stand up and speak out against the injustices facing nature, climate and vulnerable communities.
Of course, voting is one of the most powerful things you can do to make change - and talking to people in your life will help to ensure they're well informed. You can check out our overview of the climate policy positions on offer here.
Please sit back, relax and enjoy this edition of Paperbark, knowing that you're part of something good. We'll see you on the other side.

NQCC UPDATES
Climate & Energy Rally
Nearly 70 activists gathered for a powerful Climate & Energy Rally, where we listened, shared and stood up for a safer, fairer and more sustainable future for all.
The rally brought together a diverse line-up of speakers - each adding their voice to a common call: our energy future must be clean, just, and community-powered.
Thank you to all who took part, and Malcolm for the wonderful photos! Follow the link to check them out...
The signs are everywhere!
The signs for climate action are literally everywhere - and we love to see it!
A big thank you to everyone who has attached one to their fence, car, or found creative ways to help spread the message.
With your support, we've now distributed 50 signs across the region!
Still want one? We’ve got a few left - just get in touch!
Saltmarsh Monitoring
NQCC joined Eartwatch on a Saltmarsh monitoring expedition in Railway Estate.
Saltmarshes remain some of the most understudied and undervalued habitats in Australia. That’s why this monitoring work is so important - the data collected will help advocate for stronger protections.

April Green Drinks
Last month, we welcomed Peter Hanley from Amnesty International Townsville.
He encouraged us to consider the root causes behind the climate, refugee, and economic crises: inequality and the lack of human rights. He argued that the climate crisis is not just an environmental issue - it is a justice issue, driven by overconsumption and systemic greed. Thank you Peter!
Palm Sunday Walk 2025
NQCC joined Amnesty International for the Palm Sunday Walk for Peace and Justice for Refugees on April 13. Over a hundred and fifty people came together, and we heard truly powerful messages - including personal stories from people who fled war, yet still dare to dream of freedom, safety, and finding their passion. From Green Washing to Real Eco-Social Justice
By Social Workers for Climate Action & Eco-Social Advocates
Environmental crises are not separate from social crises - they are deeply interconnected. As a social worker in Townsville, we see how climate change, biodiversity loss, extractivism, and social inequality collide in the lives of people and ecosystems.
Rather than focusing only on "climate change," we advocate for an eco-social justice approach...

Home among Cassowaries
We were lucky enough to come across this lovely article about NQCC legend Kenn Parker.
It tells the heartwarming story of how he built his home in the rainforest using timber salvaged from Cyclone Yasi, and offers a glimpse into his life shared with the cassowaries.
A beautiful read for anyone who loves nature, resilience, and a good yarn.
