Last Sunday, we set up our stall at Willows Market, right under one of Australia’s largest car park solar panel projects - a fitting location for conversations about our energy future! We had 20 in-depth conversations, with renewables once again coming out on top.
Many people shared their positive experiences with rooftop solar and even home batteries for EV charging. Some felt energized by the growing number of renewable projects along the coast and believed we should already be further along in the transition.
But Willows Market also brought some surprises. We spoke to several people who still support coal and gas, citing concerns about renewable reliability, impacts on wildlife, and skepticism about cost savings. These conversations reinforced why open dialogue is so important - misinformation is common, and we were happy to share insights on how we can make the transition work for both the environment and our communities.
Nuclear energy was also a hot topic, with strong voices against it, including one woman who recalled protesting nuclear power in the 1980s while carrying her young daughter. Concerns centered around cost, waste, and long-term risks. At the same time, some attendees were curious to explore its potential role in the future.
One thing was clear: everyone acknowledged climate change, whether they noticed shifts locally or during travel. However, some felt Australia’s actions wouldn’t make a significant global impact.
We’re also thrilled that five of our climate action signs found new homes, helping to spread the message beyond the market stall!
A special thanks to our amazing volunteer, Adam, for his help on the day! We also appreciate Labor candidate for Herbert, Edwina Andrew, for stopping by and listening to what the community had to say about the energy transition.
