Paperbark May 2024

Paperbark header

Happy Environment Day! Despite the crises our natural world is facing, its resilience and beauty is always worth celebrating. I hope you have found a way to do this today.

It's a jam-packed edition of Paperbark, because in typical North Queensland fashion, as the weather cools down, events heat up!

In the past few weeks, we've quizzed at Green Drinks, gathered with members at a General Meeting and mingled with locals at Ecofiesta! The month ahead is looking just as busy, so make sure to mark our events in your diary!

Heat & Hazards: Ecofiesta

At Sunday's Ecofiesta, we asked locals about their experiences with extreme weather. We gained great insights, meaningful engagement and some excellent, eye-catching data to support our Heat & Hazards campaign - calling upon the State Government to fund appropriate climate adaptation measures and pushing for nature-based solutions. You can help by signing up to a Story Circle!

Story Circles

Help us to build a picture of the lived experience of climate change in North Queensland. If climate change has touched your life in some way while living in this region, we would love to hear your story!

We will be holding our first story circle on Sunday 16th June (2-4pm) at the NQCC office. RSVP here!

Movie Screening

NQCC is joining with Move Beyond Coal to bring you an intimate backyard screening of Walanbaa Ngiiyani: Stronger Together. This short documentary shows how incredible bonds of solidary are formed in the fight to protect Country and climate and build a powerful shared resistance.

When: 6 - 7.30pm Saturday 22nd June
Where: NQCC office

Renewables at Ecofiesta

70 people participated in our interactive survey at Ecofiesta, which asked them to rate their support for the energy transition and how informed they felt about it. Most were moderately to extremely supportive of renewables, but many felt under-informed. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stall! We will use this feedback when engaging with government and energy developers in NQ.

Energy Champions Training

Are you a champion of renewable energy, based in North Queensland? Would you like to meet other energy champions and gain more knowledge and skills? This FREE, full-day, in-person training has been postponed until Saturday 13th July, giving you a second chance to register! Gain some new skills from facilitators, speakers and trainers from all over!

Beach Clean-Up

Join NQCC and Tangaroa Blue to help prevent marine debris from entering the Great Barrier Reef! You'll be helping clean our beautiful beaches whilst gathering important information for the Australian Marine Debris Initiative Database.

Where: South Townsville Secret Beach

Mundy Creek Working Bee

Where: Mundy Creek Landcare Site

ReefBlitz on now!

ReefBlitz is on from 1 - 8th June!
