This month, the dust has been settling across the state following the October election. While we are reaching out to our new MPs, uncertainty remains around several policy pieces of importance to us, including our energy transition and the path to treaty.
The urgency for climate action has never been higher, with North Queensland getting an early taste of summer. This month, Mount Isa recorded 11 consecutive days over 40 degrees and 64 power poles were burnt beyond repair in recent bushfires in our region.
Meanwhile, in Azerbaijan, global climate talks have again brought disappointment, with several commitments on climate action and funding for adaptation falling far short of the mark.
In times of crisis, what do we do with our frustration, fear and grief? We connect with our community, celebrate wins, show solidarity and take action. You will find opportunities for all of these things (and more) in this edition of Paperbark.

NQCC UPDATES
Living with Climate Change
North Queenslanders are already experiencing the impacts of climate change. This report contains some powerful local stories of resilience, fear, community and hope. These stories are crucial to our Heat and Hazards campaign addressing the worsening impacts of climate change using nature-based solutions for adaptation. Please take the time to explore our report and share it with your networks.
NQCC History Comes to Life
To celebrate 50 years of NQCC, we've collected some colourful stories of our history to share with you. Almost all of them have been released now and we are getting wonderful feedback. Thank you to Kate Osborne and Townsville City Council for allowing us to capture these memories. Follow the link below to dive into a NQCC treasure!

OTHER UPDATES & OPPORTUNITIES
Great Barrier Reef Outlook Report
Every five years, The Reef Authority releases an Outlook Report that examines the Reef's health, pressures and likely future. You can access the full 2024 Outlook Report here.
"The window of opportunity to secure a positive future for the reef is closing. The findings from this report are undeniably clear - climate change is the greatest threat to the Great Barrier Reef."
Port Dredging Update
The search continues for an ideal dumping site for the Port of Townsville's maintenance dredge spoil. The sites identified as most favourable following recent community consultation have been found to be unviable - at least in the short-term (see the briefing here).
As members of the Port's Technical Advisory and Consultative Committee, we advocate for conservation outcomes and are always open to input from our members.
Path to Treaty
The First Nations Actions Network has started a petition in support of the Path to Treaty Act 2023. Currently we see motions to abolish the Path to Treaty with the argument it would create further division.
If you believe that truth-telling is crucial to addressing ongoing inequities for Australia's First Nations Peoples, then please sign the petition below. Learn more about the Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry here.
Report Marine Strandings
If you see a marine animal stranding of sick, injured or dead turtles, dolphins, dugongs, seals or whales, report it with the QWildlife App. A Queensland Government officer or trained strandings responder in the relevant region will be contacted with the details of your sighting and will determine the appropriate response.
The app is also used to report wildlife sightings for koalas and crocodiles.
